Well, Happy May Day everyone! Who knew it could be such a fun holiday? I'm told that May 1st (similar to our Labor Day) is one of the biggest celebrations here in Togo.

The day starts off with a parade. We were told that the people would begin lining up for the parade between 7:30 and 8am and then once enough people had gathered they would begin marching down the street through Adeta. We got to Adeta around 9am and then stood on the side of the road until about 10:30am when the parade actually started.

The lead car was a grey taxi with bed mattresses on top that were for sale. Groups of people walked along behind the "mattress float" wearing matching shirts or outfits to identify which company or industry they worked for.

The entire parade took all of 2 minutes to watch. Now I understand why the streets weren't lined with people sitting in lawn chairs drinking canned soft drinks.

The last "float" in the parade was a water packaging company and one of their employees was sitting on top of the van wearing plastic water bags. I thought that was a nice touch.
